Vaca Frita

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

It’s been a while since I made a post about food.  Kind of ironic since I am such a foodie!!  This weekend I had the pleasure of having dinner with my honey at Havana Harry’s.  We live in Miami, so Spanish restaurants are practically on every corner, but each have their specialties.  While the entire menu is great there, my favorite dish is Vaca Frita by far. Literally translated as “Fried Cow,” the only thing that comes to my mind is YUMMY!

This delicious concoction of crispy beef and caramelized onions sprinkled with lime just melts in your mouth.  So savory and full of flavor, your taste buds will thank you over and over again.  Served with rice and black beans, it’s nearly impossible to finish, but fun to try.  You can get this dish in chicken or pork as well, but the beef is my favorite.  If you haven’t tried Vaca Frita before, make sure to order it next time.  You won’t be disappointed.

Women Are So Fierce

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

I know you have seen countless races in track and field where men are always faster than women.  Yeah yeah, whatever.  But can men run in stilettos? A new world record has been set for the fastest relay race in Stiletto heels, after more than 100 women took part to raise money and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in Sydney Australia. They completed the 300-foot race in only one minute and four seconds. I love it! I’m thinking we should have a race here in Miami.

Flashback Friday-Slip N Slide

Friday, September 24th, 2010

I woke up this morning in a wonderful mood.  The weather is nice.  Sunny and breezy.  Sometimes I really love Miami.  I turn on the radio and what do I hear?  A booty bass mix that you can only find in Miami.  I loved to dance to bass music long ago. Uncle Al was one of my favorites.  That was the kind of dancing where you lost about 10 pounds because everyone was dripping with sweat when all was said and done.  What a perfect day to drive around with the sunroof and windows down. And booty music blasting away.  Happy Friday!!!

The New American Idol

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

It’s been a while since I’ve watched the show, but this may be interesting.  It’s official, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will be the new judges for season 10 along with Randy Jackson.  I have to admit that I’ve never been a huge fan of J.Lo’s music, but I like her movies and her fashion game is FIERCE!   Steven Tyler is awesome as a musician, but I don’t always get his fashion sense.  Anyhow. I think this is going  to be either be really cool or ultra boring.  I hope they don’t lie to people that really suck trying to be too nice.  That’s where Simon is going to be truly missed when it comes to telling people they suck.  What do you all think?

One of These Things is Not Like the Other

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

This post is not solely about the controversy surrounding Gabby Sidibe’s cover of Elle.  Having been to numerous photo shoots, I believe her skin was not lightened and she is indeed blown-out by intense studio lighting.

Rather, I would like to bring to your attention an online article published on this week’s Newsweek.  Kudos to Allison Samuels for such a poignant piece.  I believe this article bypasses judgement of Sidibe and dives into addressing media bias and half-hearted attempts to cover “nontraditional beauty.”

An excerpt:

“So why Sidibe? We all know that mainstream has always had a fascination with the so-called exotic look of very dark skin, fuller lips, and broader noses, and it continues to this day. Sidibe represents a look that’s not going to be the big-screen love interest in Ryan Reynolds’s next film. She won’t be considered for the same juicy, high-paying roles as Megan Fox or Kate Hudson will be. Gabrielle Union probably won’t be either, but it won’t be because she doesn’t have the “look.” It will be for the same reasons Regina King gets confused for another black actress on the red carpet and Kerry Washington can’t be the lead in the next romantic comedy. It’s the reason Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and many other black actresses can’t find work unless Tyler Perry is making a film. Hollywood and the fashion industry just don’t care.”

Thanks to Val for the comparison covers of Rihanna and Liya Kebede.

The Town

Monday, September 20th, 2010

My honey and I went to see this movie on Saturday. This wasn’t on my must see list, but I knew my honey wanted to check it out.  It’s the least I could do since I always seem to drag him to all the movies I want to see.

Anyways, I don’t think I will be going to Boston any time soon.  Sorry if you are from there.  But there were parts of the movie where I couldn’t make out what they were talking about because of their accents. (I’m sure Bostonians would feel the same way if they came down to Miami).

There aren’t too many Ben Affleck movies that I like (besides Jersey Girl), but this one was good.  It wasn’t your typical bank robbing bad guy movie.  The story was very well written and I would recommend checking it out. With just the right amount of action, drama, suspense, and comic relief, you won’t be disappointed.
